Hi,

I have recently aquired an eastern water dragon which was captured and removed from my neighbours garden!
I think it's a sub-adult (~120 SVL), and not certain of the sex (has a very small amount of pale red on the chest below the neck).

Anyway, I'd be grateful if anyone could provide any information regarding diet and whether the animal can be kept in an outdoor enclosure year-round?
I have tried mealworms (and beetles), dog roll, lettuce, dandelions (flowers and leaves), grated carrot, and banana. She ate the mealworms and a piece of dog roll.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I've recently acquired a permit to keep common gecko, green gecko, or common skink from DoC. I was a member of the Herp. Something that may be worth of note is I've used rose bush clippings and branches as a kind of scaffolding to build up topsoil on what was otherwise a bare clay bank. This seems to be benificial in that it keeps all the mammals away, even birds are unhappy working in it ( they go a little further down where they can find bugs in the dirt ) So its skink city up in here these days!
I have deliberately left this rose bush growing along the fence line now to dissuade rats and mice using the top of the fence line as a highway as I have wittnessed them doing on neighbouring properties.

I was suprised by the number I spotted as I was working. I also seem to have a high population of slugs and snails! My question is, are skinks likely to eat bait if I decide to use it. If you think they may, I won't use it. Thanks

My family and I will be travelling to New Zealand in January and doing a really whirlwind tour of Northland. We probably have six days total. My son and I are herp-fanatics and are very excited at the possibility of seeing wild herps there (or anywhere, there are NO reptiles in alaska). We own rhacs and will soon own pink tounged skinks, so we are particularly interested in geckos and skinks: you seem to have many types!!!

We dont' have alot of experience field herping (alaska limits that) . We do have common sense. We wont' touch anything.

Can you offer advice where to go in Northland to find wild herps and what sort we will find? We promise not to touch anything. After australia (we will be returning from there) where everything is poisonous as hell, we won't want to!

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer?

These animals have been given to me by DOC. They have come from a home in the Rotorua area. We do not know where they were originally taken from. Apparently there was a Male and a Female but the female escaped so we do not have an image of her. The juvenile is meant to be offspring from the Male. The adult males eyes appear quite dark in the photo but under light they are brown rather than black. My feeling is Common Gecko but some verification would be appreciated.

Hi,

I am a German Veterinarian and my main interest are reptiles. I am in NZ for almost 5 years and have been introduced to the New Zealand reptile fauna through my research partner John Perrott who has been working with native birds before.

We are writing an article about the skink population in Mokoia Island, lake Rotorua.
It would be very helpful to gain some more knowlege about the life history of Oligosoma infrapunctatum. If anyone could give me some detailed information about
- size at birth
- size/age at first mating
- maximal age
- preferred food
- parasites

That would be really helpful for us to interprete our data collection.

Thank you

I have a friend at university who is enquiring on behalf of a regional council that is currently spraying coastal vegetation for a habitat restoration project, and they would like to know of situations where herbicide has been used where lizards have been killed, or conversely, where herbicide has been used where lizards are known to be present but no lizards were directly effected by the herbicide use.

I'm sure I read at some stage about geckos (Goldstripe geckos?) being killed when roundup was applied to the plant they were living on. I'll have a look at my stash of previous years' Moko, but if anyone can remember this event, or has observed anything similar themselves, I'd love to hear about it.

Rainbow skink awareness / observations

I've been looking around to see where is the best place to post something like this, I hope here is ok?

The members forums seem to be quite heavily pre-segmented with no where for general discussions or new subjects / topics. Maybe someone can fill me in on that one?

Anyway I'm sure most of us are aware by now of the threat Rainbow skinks pose to native invertebrates and lizards alike. Examples like Hawaii demonstrate what may happen to a island country like NZ.
So I thought it would be in our best interests to collect any knowledge that people may have experienced personally about their habits and such.

Today I was partially surprised to see a Rainbow skink entering the domain of the gecko by climbing approximately 1.5 to 2 metres up a "Griselinia lucida" quivering his tail as he went, poking his head around the back of leaves sending plant hoppers flying. Higher and higher till he found one in reach, which he ate right in front of me at about head height. Ran to get my camera but he had finished it before I got back.
I was inside watching through a kitchen window so I often get to see them acting as though they think no-one is there.
What he ate was a mature Passionvine hopper which whilst not native would undoubtedly be a source of food for native gecko. I harvest them for my own geckos so now I know why I have to stand on a chair to reach the top branches as all the ones on lower branches have been eaten! After he had finished it he shimmied down the branch with his tail to one side for balance but also as a kind of sled. Incredible agility!

So unfortunately you have one alien organism sponsoring the life of others no doubt providing a rich source of energy for the alien invaders!

In the last news letter it was mentioned how a rainbow skink nest of 300 or more eggs was found and has anyone else ever found nests.
Well I have never found a nest but then I have not looked. However I have noticed on many occasions Rainbow skinks disappearing into the wall of my house under the weather boards. This alone might not raise any eyebrows but here is the clincher! They were entering the wall at the point where the mains power supply entered the house and leading up to the meter. Now if you ever put your hands on your mains cable ( or near by ) you may notice it is warm.
Now to me this would seem as though anywhere in New Zealand there is a house may provide suitable temperatures for a lizard looking for an environment closer to Australian conditions. Not to mention it would make a superb nursery for eggs. Something to keep in mind.

I have some wild Rainbow skink combat photos that would blow you away, unfortunately they are trapped on a corrupted hard drive. Had over 2000 Rainbow skink pics, all natural and I think I had 4-5 of an incredible battle I witnessed one day. Two on one, the shots capture an amazing confrontation. They look like Chinese dragons rearing up on their tails, grappling and biting, trying to claw each others eyes. If I remember correctly the battle lasted for several minutes with the photos showing that it was the same two skinks united against a third.
Ever since I have wondered what was going on? It doesn't appear as if it were two males trying to mate with a female, seemed more like they were just trying to beat up on the third one so maybe it would go away?
Biting right across the top of the head the stomach and side and even got a shot of one of them biting the hand/arm of number three. You can see some good compression of scales/ flesh on the body bites and the hand bites may have caused some broken bones but overall I don't think anything permanent would have came from it. These skinks are a bit like lands sharks swimming through the leaf litter, many of them have scars much like sharks from previous encounters.
I was watching from no more then a few feet away with no glass to hide behind but they seemed oblivious. Most lizard encounters are normally a nip from what I've seen with my own geckos but these skinks were in a all out two on one wrestling match.

I've been quoted around $900 to retrieve the data off my HDD which just kills me!
