Hi all,

My question is whether fire-bellied newts should be spending time in the water or whether they spend more time on land?
I have three newts, which all turned out to be male after I raised them from eggs. I have them in a sizable Exoterra enclosure with access to water, land and hiding places. There is a mix of artificial and natural vegetation provided and the entire enclosure is kept at a reasonably high humidity.

Since metamorphosing, my newts have never ventured into the water and spend all their time on land. Is this normal?

I have read that they usually feed in water and spend time submerged.

I thought it may be something to do with the chemical composition of the water, but I often provide freshly collected rainwater, and still they do not enter the water.

Any comments would be welcomed.

Snake neck turtle in outdoor pond

Hi everyone!

I've got a 3 year old Snake neck turtle who's been in a heated tank indoors since I got him from a local pet shop about 2.5 years ago. He's now in a small pond enclosure out the backyard (has been for about 2 months) and he seems to be doing fine although he's understandably slowed down a bit. We're in Dunedin.

We did alot of googling on the subject but alot of the information was conflicting, and most search results weren't from NZ. One said they can happily hibernate over the winter and permanantly stay outdoors while another said they will surely die.

The plan was to get him used to the pond over summer and hope he would hibernate during the winter months so we could permanatly house him there. If it got too cold, we'd bring him inside and back into the tank he goes.

Anyway, to my questions... Does anyone know any tips for keeping a pond warmer during winter months without a heater? We have 3 goldfish in the pond with him, thinking he might chase them around and warm up a bit, also the pond has 'pond weed' on the surface which we hope will keep heat in aswell. There's also a big flat rock in there so he can climb out onto the dry sandy area if he wants to bask (although I've never seen him bask I thought I'd give him the option).

Does anyone have a Snake Neck turtle in an unheated outdoor pond?

If I were to leave "No0dle" in the pond during winter, would he survive it?

Also, if I added a red eared turtle to the pond, how would it survive? Would he hibernate differently than the Snake Neck?
(might also add No0dle was in a tank for the first year with a Red Eared turtle and they got along fine).

If there are any tips you have I'd really appreciate it. We love pets of all kinds and certainly want what's best for him so if all else fails we'll bring him inside for winter but it would be great if the pond could be his permanant home.

Thanks for reading!

Hi,

I have recently aquired an eastern water dragon which was captured and removed from my neighbours garden!
I think it's a sub-adult (~120 SVL), and not certain of the sex (has a very small amount of pale red on the chest below the neck).

Anyway, I'd be grateful if anyone could provide any information regarding diet and whether the animal can be kept in an outdoor enclosure year-round?
I have tried mealworms (and beetles), dog roll, lettuce, dandelions (flowers and leaves), grated carrot, and banana. She ate the mealworms and a piece of dog roll.

Any help would be appreciated.

Pretty sure there is only one species they could be but what do you think? Images on the net seem to be pretty scarce on these.
Something that may be worth of note is I've used rose bush clippings and branches as a kind of scaffolding to build up topsoil on what was otherwise a bare clay bank. This seems to be benificial in that it keeps all the mammals away, even birds are unhappy working in it ( they go a little further down where they can find bugs in the dirt ) So its skink city up in here these days!
I have deliberately left this rose bush growing along the fence line now to dissuade rats and mice using the top of the fence line as a highway as I have wittnessed them doing on neighbouring properties.

Hi, I have recently moved to a new flat in Kaitaia. Unfortunately I destroyed some skink habitat in developing a new vege garden. I was suprised by the number I spotted as I was working. I also seem to have a high population of slugs and snails! My question is, are skinks likely to eat bait if I decide to use it. If you think they may, I won't use it. Thanks

My family and I will be travelling to New Zealand in January and doing a really whirlwind tour of Northland. We probably have six days total. My son and I are herp-fanatics and are very excited at the possibility of seeing wild herps there (or anywhere, there are NO reptiles in alaska). We own rhacs and will soon own pink tounged skinks, so we are particularly interested in geckos and skinks: you seem to have many types!!!

We dont' have alot of experience field herping (alaska limits that) . We do have common sense. We wont' touch anything.

Can you offer advice where to go in Northland to find wild herps and what sort we will find? We promise not to touch anything. After australia (we will be returning from there) where everything is poisonous as hell, we won't want to!

Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer?

These animals have been given to me by DOC. They have come from a home in the Rotorua area. We do not know where they were originally taken from. Apparently there was a Male and a Female but the female escaped so we do not have an image of her. The juvenile is meant to be offspring from the Male. The adult males eyes appear quite dark in the photo but under light they are brown rather than black. My feeling is Common Gecko but some verification would be appreciated.
