RE: Advice on exotic reptile husbandry
hi, just wondering why we are directed to other sites for trading exotics?
I would much rather offer any I have to members of the herp society.
are we not embracing all forms of reptile keeping?

Hi,

The crowd at East Road Pets are NZHS members. The details for this contact is really only for assitance for less experienced exotic keepers.

As the message says, they have a lot of experience, not just in keeping, but breeding.
There are a number of NZHS members who feel that the Society should only be for "native" gecko's & skinks. But with the increase in popularity & numbers of people keeping exotic reptiles we need to be able to refer
people on to appropriately experienced exotic reptile keepers.

Hope this helps.

RE: Advice on exotic reptile husbandry
hi Phil
only posted on here as wasn't sure where else to query the last sentence.
I think its great that there is a noted contact for exotic keepers needing help.

I did however think the society had moved on from only wanting native involvement and can't see the harm in being able to offer exotics as well as natives on our member only part of the forum...

cheers
chris

RE: Advice on exotic reptile husbandry
Hi Chris,

Yes the Society has definately moved on. There is recognition that exotic reptiles are not going to disappear, but probably become even more abundant.
As a Society we need to ensure the well being of exotics as well as our native Gecko's & Skinks.

It's all good!

Phil

RE: Advice on exotic reptile husbandry
:)Hi Chris, As a member of society for many years, I recognise that we are here to assist and give information to all members on the care of our species. I also understand that Exotics are here to stay, and that you also need advice and assistance. If you are happy to swap your exotics with members the same as we do that is not a problem , but to sell these through our Newsletter would not be seen by many people as suitable. Membership privileges include Newsletter, free advertising, access to Library and free advertising for SWAPPING animals. We do not want to be seen as a Pet Trade, as our whole reason for being in this society was to preserve our native species, study habitat, species diseases etc, so that in time these may be released into the wild. If we want to be seen by Doc to be a responsible society we do not want to become a commercial trading enterprise nor do we want to be aligned to one. To refresh everyones memory here is the objectives of the society:
2.1 To promote awareness & interest in amphibans and reptiles and their conservation
2.2 To encourage the study of New Zealand's own species
2.3 To encourage the captive keeping and breeding of both NZ herpetofauna and such exotic species of reptiles and amphibians as may be legally kept.
As you can see the commercial trading or any other profit making is not part of it. The society is delighted to handle exotics but under the umbrella of our objectives. Ngaire Jury
