Certainly seems to fit with H.duvaucelii in size, but something is not quite right. The stretching caused by the taxidermy is probably the cause, but what if it's neither H.duvaucelii nor H. delcourti? Stands to reason that if we are still discovering new living species, there must be a few which are possibly extinct that we are still unaware of.
The silver lining is that it's caused a bit of activity on this forum...

Interesting outlook on our potential lack of knowledge on extinct species, and where this specimen fits in.
Agree with you on the silver lining, lets hope the activity continues across the forum.

Agreed Rod! We would be naive to think that there was only one large endemic species (over the 160 SVL) given the diverse array of species currently known and our poor subsoil record. It certainly needs to be looked at a little closer. Rod H's response will be informative (I'll remind him today) and I have asked Aaron Bauer for his opinion too.
